Technical SEO Checklist for 2026

A strong technical foundation makes every other SEO effort easier. Start with crawlability. Make sure robots directives are correct, important pages return 200 status codes and your XML sitemap reflects the pages you actually want indexed.

Next, review indexation. Look for duplicate pages, thin pages, orphan pages and pages that should be canonicalised. Then check speed and Core Web Vitals. Large uncompressed images, unused JavaScript and layout shifts are still common issues on service sites.

Review headings, schema and internal links. A page should have one clear H1, descriptive H2 sections, valid structured data where relevant and contextual links to related pages. Internal links help search engines discover and understand content relationships.

Finally, check mobile rendering and form usability. Technical SEO is not only for bots. If users struggle to load or use the page, the ranking signals usually suffer too. A technical audit should end with prioritised fixes, not just a long list of errors.
